HISTORY OF KRABI
The province of Krabi was founded in 1872. Even the origin of the name is arguable, Krabi mean swords. The name might be taken from the fact that ancient swords were found in the area.
Krabi can also mean monkeys. This is another interpretation from the historical site of a town named Banthai Samo, which was one of the twelve zodiacal tributaries of Nakhon Si Thammarat. The symbol of the town was a monkey, a zodiac animal.
On the other hand, the province’s name could have come from the plant Eleiodoxa confert palm – abundant along the waterways of Krabi. The name of the plant in Malay is Kelubi which might have been corrupted tp Krabi.
Whatever’s in the name, the current symbol of the province depicts double swords, lending weight to the weapon origin in preference to plant or monkey.
